Hierarchy of Settings

Values for some fields can be entered on more than one screen in Parcel. The order in which such a value overrides others that may have been entered for the same parameter elsewhere is as follows:

  1. Transactional level – A value manually entered on a shipping screen (Warehouse or Desktop) or by means of an API call overrides any other value for the same parameter entered elsewhere as a default; for example, on a Web Admin configuration screen.

  2. User Preference level – If no value is entered on a shipping screen and a value for the same parameter is specified on a tab of the My Profile > Settings screen, then Parcel auto-populates the field on the shipping screen with this latter value; for example, an address on the My Profile > Settings > Return To tab (see following example).

  3. Carrier/Account level – If no value is entered on a shipping screen, no value for the same parameter is specified on a tab of My Profile > Settings, but a default value is entered on a carrier account or configuration screen, then Parcel auto-populates the field with this latter value.

  4. Location level – If no value is entered at levels 1-3 and a value exists for a parameter at the location level, then Parcel uses this value; for example, an address on the Location Settings > Return To tab (see following example).

  5. System-level – System-level parameters do not generally have settings at other levels and apply across all carriers.

Currently, no system-level parameters exist in Parcel that can be overridden by values entered in fields at levels 1-4.

Example

If required for a carrier that supports it, a shipper can enter a Return Address that is different from the Sender address in one of three places:

  • The Location Settings > Return Address tab when creating or modifying a location using the Web Admin tool.

  • The Alternate Return Address sub-tab on the My Profile > Settings > Return Address tab.

  • The Alternate Return Address sub-tab on the Return To tab of the Warehouse screen.
