Dangerous Goods (Hazmat)

Parcel enables you to process dangerous goods/hazardous materials packages with Level 1-3 carriers as described in the following tables. Parcel does not validate the data you enter while processing a hazardous materials package.
Notes:

  • The term "hazardous materials" ("hazmat" for short) is used when the package is being shipped within the United States. The term "dangerous goods" is used when the package is being shipped internationally.

  • Before processing a dangerous goods/hazmat package in Parcel, you need to familiarize yourself with the specific carrier's rules and restrictions for this type of shipment. (These include service and destination restrictions among other rules.) For more information, see the Dangerous Goods/Hazmat Help topics for a supported carrier, as well as that carrier's Web site, which includes hazmat guides.

  • The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is an international industry trade group of airlines primarily concerned with the regulation of hazmat shipments. You should ensure that you are referencing the most recent version of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulation Manual. For more information, see the IATA Web site .

Qualifications

In order to ship dangerous goods/hazardous materials, you must meet the legal requirements of the country from which you are shipping (country of origin). Required qualifications for such shipments vary by country and depend on whether the shipment is Domestic or International:

  • U.S. Federal law requires that you receive training and certification from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) before shipping dangerous goods or hazardous materials with any carrier. For information about certification, visit {+} http://hazmat.dot.gov+ images/images/icons/linkext7.gif .

  • Customers with shipments originating from other countries are responsible for researching and complying with local requirements.

Hazmat Support Levels

Parcel recognizes and supports four levels of support for Dangerous Goods (aka hazardous materials or "hazmat"). Each carrier that Parcel supports has a specific level of Dangerous Goods support as described in the following table:

If Hazmat Support Level is...

Support for Hazmat in Parcel includes the following...

Level 1

  • Carrier compliance

  • IATA Forms

  • Carrier End-of-Day (EOD) Reports

  • Special Forms required by carrier

Level 2

  • Carrier Compliance - See Level 1.

  • IATA and/or carrier-specific shipment level forms

Level 3

Carrier compliance only. No forms are printed.

Level 4

No Hazmat support. (Either the carrier itself does not support hazmat shipments or Parcel does not currently support hazmat shipments for these carriers.)

Note: IATA stands for International Air Transport Association, an international industry trade group of airlines. For more information about IATA, see the IATA Web site . The IATA form requires a "candy stripe" border. Some carriers can provide customers with this stock but it is typically "branded" so as to be specific for that carrier. It is recommended that you obtain non-carrier specific IATA paper stock.

How Parcel uses Emergency Contact information

For Level 1– Level 3 carriers, you can enter default Emergency Contact information for a particular location on the Location Settings > Shipper Defaults > General tab.
Additionally, for Level 1 – Level 2 carriers, you can enter Emergency Contact information for hazardous materials/dangerous goods at the Item level in the following ways:

  • In the Emergency Contact fields for each type of item in the Global Settings > Dangerous Goods Data table. Data from the Dangerous Goods Code and Description columns in this table populate the Hazmat Code drop-down list on the Item sub-tab of the Dangerous Goods/Hazmat tab on the Warehouse Options screen. When you select a specific Hazmat Code from this list, Parcel populates the corresponding fields on Item tab, including any Emergency Contact information for the selected Item's Hazmat Code. If no Emergency contact information for the Item exists, these fields remain blank.

  • Directly on the Item sub-tab of the Dangerous Goods/Hazmat tab on the Warehouse Options screen. If the fields are populated with default Emergency Contact information for the item's Hazmat Code (see previous bullet), you can substitute updated information as necessary.

For Level 1 – Level 2 carriers, Parcel uses Emergency Contact information as follows:

  • If no item in the shipment has Emergency Contact information associated with it, Parcel uses the Location level Emergency Contact information for the Upload and on forms and reports.

  • If items in the shipment have associated Emergency Contact information, Parcel uses the Emergency Contact information for the first item in the shipment on forms and reports.

For Level 3 carriers, if the Emergency Contact information for a package differs from the default Emergency Contact information for your location, enter this information in these fields on the Options screen Hazmat tab. Otherwise, Parcel uses the information you entered at the location level but does not populate the fields on the options screen with this information.

Dangerous Goods/Hazmat Best Practice

Enter your default Emergency Contact information at the Location level. For Level 1 – Level 2 carriers, enter this information for a specific item's Hazmat Code at the Global Settings level only where this information differs from that in your Location Settings. Enter Emergency Contact information on the Item sub-tab of the Dangerous Goods/Hazmat tab on the Warehouse Options screen only if this information has changed from the default information for a particular item's Hazmat Code.
Note: Level 3 carriers have a limit of one hazmat item per package.

Using dedicated printers for hazmat forms

Using Parcel's Web Admin tool, you can specify IP extensions for dedicated printers loaded with paper stock for specific dangerous goods/hazardous materials forms. For more information on configuring this type of printer setup, see the following Help topic: Location Settings - Printer Map.
