FedEx - International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions Overview

Scroll

International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions (IDDSS) is a set of contractual services that enables you to ship FedEx shipments as follows:

Canada origin to U.S. destination

U.S. origin to Canada

Mexico origin to U.S.

Requirements to use International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions

A contract with FedEx to use the International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions Special Service (see your FedEx CSP).

A Canada, US, or Mexico origin shipping location and account.

For more information on these IDDSS services and requirements, see the FedEx International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions Web page.

Canada Origin to U.S.

International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions with a Canada origin enables you to ship from a Canada origin to the U.S. border, have the shipments cleared by FedEx Customs or a broker of your choice, and then continue the shipment to any of the 50 United States via any U.S. domestic FedEx service (Air or Ground). This service also allows you to avoid using an expensive export service for shipments from Canada to the United States because the two legs of the shipment are handled as follows:

This leg of the shipment…

Is handled like this…

First leg (from your Canadian shipping location to the U.S.-based FedEx hub at the border)

Handled by a domestic Canada shipping service.

Second leg (from the U.S. FedEx hub at the border to the final U.S. destination)

Handled by a U.S. domestic FedEx service.

The International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions service also allows you to have a package returned to an address in the destination country. If a package cannot be delivered to its final recipient, the package is sent to this (required) return address. This procedure avoids any brokerage fees for returning the package to your shipping location.

An International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions shipment can consist of up to 999 packages (999 commodities or packages per shipment maximum) destined to different U.S. locations. Therefore, you can use different FedEx shipping services (to handle the second legs of the packages) within the same International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions shipment. For a list of these services available with FedEx International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions, see the following Help topic: FedEx - International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions Overview. For an overview of the International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions shipping process, see FedEx International DirectDistribution Surface Solutions - Process Overview.
