FedEx - Processing Radioactive Materials

Scroll

If the commodity that you are shipping is radioactive (all radioactive materials are Class 7), you must complete the Radioactive page in the Dangerous Goods tab of the Options screen while processing the package. Follow these instructions:

1.After you have completed the Shipment, Package, and Item sub-tabs on the Dangerous Goods tab of the Options screen, click Radioactive at the top of the page.

2.Most of the data is populated automatically based on the Hazmat Code you selected on the Item sub-tab. However, you might need to complete some of the fields. This table provides a description of each field:

Field

Description

Radionuclide

The radionuclide assigned to the substance being shipped. A table of basic radionuclides is available in section 10.4.A of the DG Regulation Manual. For example, aluminum (13) has the radionuclide A1-26.

Radio Activity

A measurement of the activity of the shipment. For fissile material, the weight of the material in grams or kilograms may be substituted for the radio activity.

Label Type

From the drop-down list, select the type of label on the package. The label types are as follows:

White I

Yellow II

Yellow III

Length

The length of the package in metric units.

Safety Index CSI

CSI is an abbreviation for Criticality Safety Index. It is a measurement for packages containing fissile material. The measurement is determined by dividing the number 50 by the smaller of the numbers determined using the rules in section 10.6.2.4.3 of the DG Regulation Manual.

Packaging Type

A description of the type of packaging the substance is contained in. Acceptable packaging types are listed in the appropriate section of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulation Manual.

Activity Units

From the drop-down list, select the unit by which the radioactivity was measured. The basic unit must be the becquerel. The drop-down list enables you to select the multiple used; for example: kilo-, mega-, giga-, etc.; for example: kilobecquerel.

Transport Index

A number based on the radiation exposure of a package. This is determined based on the maximum measurement of the radiation in mrem/h at a distance of 1 meter from the package surface (mrem/h is the radioactive dosimeter reading).

Width

The width of the package in metric units.

Height

The height of the package in metric units.

Surface Reading
(mrem/h)

The radioactivity exposure reading of the package's surface. The reading is in mrem/h.

Units

The unit of measure used to determine the package's dimensions. Must be a metric unit of measure.

Chemical Formula

The chemical formula of the substance.

Physical Form

A description of the physical form of the radioactive substance (liquid, solid, gas, or special).

3.When you have finished editing the data on the Radioactive page, click Item at the top of the page. Then click [ADD] to add the commodity to the grid at the bottom of the page. Click [DONE] to return to the Warehouse page to ship the package.
